Ó luí na gréine san iarthar go n-éirí na gealaí san oirthear ….. from sunset in the west to moonrise.in the east. In the middle of August we had a brief really hot spell, not something we get so often and what was an unbelievably balmy evening, myself and my daughter Shauna took a short trip up Sliabh na Caillí.
We're so, so lucky to live within 15mins of the hill and on a night like that it was wonderful to make the spontaneous decision. The air was so still, without even a whisper of a breeze. On a day like this was, it’s hard to imagine the wild winter’s day that inspired me to paint my image of the “Cailleach of the Elements”, as the ancient sovereignty Goddess mingles with earth and sky, her hair blown by the wind. Tha image, seen below, came after a walk up on the hill on a wild winter's day.
After settling down by Cairn V which I had painted only the other day as a rough sketch, I decided to give it a go again, this time with the moon rising above the stones. You can see that image above in the composite photo. I hope to work from this rough sketch and the photos I took and maybe add another image to my collection of work based on our ancient past of Irish folklore.
