Cailleach oíche ar Sliabh na Caillí / Owl on the mountain of the Cailleach

There are two words for owl in Irish, one is Ulcabhán, the other, Cailleach oíche. The Cailleach is of course the Goddess of Loughcrew, her mountain being Sliabh na Caillí. Cailleach, the word meaning Crone, Hag, Witch, or in this case, the Crone Goddess, who built landscapes and cairns and was associated with winter. It has been thought the screech of the Barn Owl resembles that of a witch, so perhaps that is why the word Cailleach is used, and of course, oíche is the Irish for night. Or perhaps the Cailleach oíche is like the Goddess, guarding the land as it glides under the full moon.
