Gráinne Ní Mháille, also known as Granuaile and Grace O’Malley, was a woman born out of the seascape of West Mayo, someone whose story has become a mix of folklore and fact, and whose character to me epitomizes that of the wild untamed sea. She was a woman who stood out in terms of her independence, her ferocity in face of adversity and unpredictability, truly a product of her environment.
