The Speaking Horse
of Cuilcagh

An Amazing new children's book, written and illustrated by Margaret McKenna

“The Speaking Horse of Cuilcagh tells the story of young Conor as he goes on a magical journey with the mythical White Horse, meeting the characters and hearing the stories of the wonderful Cuilcagh Lakelands. Throughout the book there are QR codes which will bring you to short videos of the actual places described in the story, places where these legends are told every day.”

The Speaking Horse of Cuilcagh, a story inspired by the magical landscapes of Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark. A UNESCO Global Geopark is a special place where people work together to protect and celebrate the natural world, local history, and cultural heritage. Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark stretches across County Cavan and County Fermanagh and is filled with mountains, caves, lakes, rivers, forests, and wonderful wildlife. It is a place full of stories, adventure, and discovery.

The Geopark helps children and adults learn about how our Earth was formed over millions of years and why it is important to care for our environment. It is managed through a partnership between Cavan County Council and Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, who work together to protect and share this unique landscape for future generations. We hope this book encourages young readers to use their imagination, explore the world around them, and discover some of the fascinating stories that make Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark such a special place.

This project is funded by Creative Ireland and Cavan County Council through Creative Cavan.

Art to me, is storytelling a means to visually capture the atmosphere and tell the tales behind our landscape or capture the essence of that person’s character.
